Rams' Season Ends In Elite 8
FRESNO, Calif—Bethel College knocked the University of Mobile out of the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championships by handing the Rams a 3-0 loss in the Elite 8 Wednesday.
The game started out as a defensive struggle with only seven shots in the opening period, but Bethel broke it open with a second-half surge.
Mobile out shot Bethel 3-1 through the first 12 minutes of action in the final half, but the Wildcats struck gold in the 59th minute when Mario Vila Boa found the back of the net. Through the next 20 minutes of action, the Wildcats held the Rams to only one shot, while adding a pair of goals to ice the game.
In the 74th minute Armando Orozco struck on an unassisted goal, and then Dawyne Smith scored five minutes later when he headed home a feed from teammate Colin Crosbie. Bethel out shot Mobile 15 to 10 with a 5 to 2 edge in shots on target.
The goals broke a string of five straight shutout victories by the Rams and were the first goals given up since November 1.
Mobile finishes the season with a 13-7-2 record and the trip to the National Tournament was the 12th in school history. Bethel advances to the Final Four against an opponent to be determined.
