Four UM Men's Soccer Players
Honored With Post-Season Awards
MOBILE, Ala. -- Four
University of Mobile men's soccer players were honored with
post-season awards the NAIA announced on Monday. Junior,
defender Jamie Ferguson highlighted the list when he was
selected for the second consecutive year as a First-Team
All-American.
Ferguson, known primarily
for his defense, finished second on the team in goals scored
this season with eight.
"Jamie is a very solid
defender and this season he helped us out on the offensive
end as well," said UM head coach Peter Fuller. "His size
and heads up play gave us an added dimension on set pieces
and his leadership allowed us to have on of the best back
lines in the country. He's a terrific player and very
deserving of this honor."
Newcomer Darren Toby
registered Third-Team All-American honors in just his first
season with the Rams. Toby, a native of Scarborough,
Tobago, led the team in total points with 27 (9 goals, 9
assists).
"Darren is a phenomenal
player," said Fuller. "We were very glad to have him on our
team this season. He is an excellent ball controller and
can see the entire field. I am excited to see what the rest
of his collegiate career holds."
Finally, senior defender
Brady Bryant and sophomore goalkeeper Tommy Sarkkinen were
each selected as All-American Honorable Mentions. Brady,
who started all 21 games for the Rams at his defensive back
position also netted six goals this season.
"I've enjoyed having Brady
play in our program," said Fuller. "He's a excellent soccer
player but also a great kid. We'll miss not having him
around next season."
Sarkkinen, who missed three
games early in the season after suffering a concussion
against Oklahoma Christian University, bounced back to
record seven shutouts and post a 1.29 goals against average
in 18 games.
"Tommy did an unbelievable
job for us this season," said Fuller. "He went down hard at
the beginning of the season but got right back in there and
went after it. He's a tough goalkeeper."
The Rams, who finished the
season with a 16-5 record, lost in the quarterfinals of the
NAIA National Tournament to eventual national champion
University of Rio Grande.
