UM Cruises to 4-0 Win Over Kendall College
MOBILE, Ala. – On a very hot and humid Spring Hill
campus, three different players scored for the University of Mobile men’s
soccer team in their 4-0 win Sunday afternoon against Kendall College.
After playing a nearly scoreless first half, the Rams
got a break as they drew a red-card foul on the Kendall goalkeeper with
just a few minutes in the half. Mobile immediately took advantage. Taking
advantage of a long pass from sophomore midfielder Rueben Risco, Joel
Bartlett beat the keeper one-on-one to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. The
white and maroon struck again with just three seconds remaining in the
half as senior Mike Fricke found Brazilian freshman Thiago Ramos in the
corner of the 18-yard box. Rocketing a shot past the Kendall goalkeeper,
the defending national champions took a 2-0 halftime lead.
The flood gates opened in the second half when UM
forced the Kendall goalkeeper off his line and Ramos punched in his second
goal of the afternoon. Later, freshman Darren Toby recorded his first
ever collegiate point with an assist to freshman Johani Koivuranth to give
the Rams a 4-0 lead. The defense took over at that point and UM
goalkeeper Tommy Sarkkinen recorded his second consecutive shutout on the
very young season.
The Rams,
2-0 on the season, will return to action on Monday, Aug. 25th
in an exhibition game against the University of West Florida. The game
will be played in Pensacola, Florida with kickoff set for 5:30 p.m.
