UM defeats #24 Columbia College

September 8, 2006

MOBILE, Ala– The University of Mobile Rams used 2 second half goals to knock off #24 Columbia College Friday at the Mobile Futbol Classic.

Following a first half which featured little threat from either team and ended at 0-0, Mobile found some offense. Junior Edgar Morales and sophomore Gerardo Flores scored goals only minutes apart in the 57th and 60th minutes of the match.

Morales scored when he redirected a Joseph Awuakye ball into the net. Awuakye set the play up by controlling the ball on the far side and sending the cross just in front of the goal, where Morales redirected it to the far corner.

Flores knocked home his goal at the 60 minute mark when he set up at the top of the box and drilled a look from Daniel Waters into the back of the net.

The Rams are now 2-2 on the season with both wins coming against ranked opponents. Mobile knocked off #13 Bethel 3-2 in double OT earlier and now Columbia. Number 1 Azusa Pacific is up next Sept. 9th at 7:30 at the jungle.

Azusa Pacific comes out on top in battle of top 8 teams

MOBILE, Ala– In a matchup of top 8 teams in the NAIA, #1 Azusa Pacific proved too much for the Auburn-Montgomery Senators, prevailing 4-2.

Playing at the Mobile Futbol Classic, the teams battled to a 1-1 draw at halftime, but the Cougars’ attack began to penetrate and get point-blank looks to open up the game. Sven Simon and Steve Lenhart combined to score 2 goals apiece to keep the Cougars at the top of the polls.

Azusa opened the scoring 22 minutes into the match when Brandon Stirm broke free down the sidelines and crossed it to Simon who put it home for the 1-0 edge. The lead lasted for 19 minutes, when the Senators tied things up with Hjortur Hjartarsson knocking in a header off a look from Mikel Herrero. The play was set up when Rannver Siguryonson tapped a corner kick to Herrero for a closer look.

13 minutes into the second half, Simon put the Cougars ahead for good when he slid into the box, knocking in a cross from Stirm again. The Cougars finished their scoring with 2 more goals in the next 8 minutes. Lenhart finished things up, scoring twice in a two minute span, both on looks deep into the box.

Hjartarsson, who paced the NAIA with 48 goals last season, added his second of the game in the 82nd minute on a penalty kick.
