Men's Tennis Dominates Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile features a men's tennis team for the first time since 1998, and the 2008 Rams got off to a fine start by opening the season with a 9-0 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory over rival Spring Hill College Wednesday at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The Rams dominated from the start, with only one singles match in doubt, but Mobile still pulled that one out.

Alejandro Vial and Guilherme Lorencon teamed up in doubles action and beat Evan Davis and Brendan Gallagher 8-4, while Shaun Wintzell and Ricky Weghorst teamed up for an 8-3 doubles win over Dane Hinton and Will Seevers. Gustavo Godoi and Sam Perlmutter rounded out the doubles action with an 8-2 romp over Jimmy Chassaing and Nick Rayburn.

On the singles side, Vial and Godoi both beat their opponents 6-1,
6-0, while Jesus Urmenenta took down Chassaing 6-0, 6-2. Faulkner State transfer Ricky Weghorst blanked Seevers 6-0, 6-0, and Lorencon cruised against Hinton by scores of 6-0, 6-1.

The only match up in the air was Wintzell versus Gallagher, but Wintzell, a Fairhope native, pulled out the 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 win to complete the shutout.

Mobile moves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in GCAC action.
