Men's Tennis Finishes Tournament 2-1

MOBILE, Ala-- The UM men's tennis team capped the "Bash at the Beach" by defeating NCAA Div III Transylvania University 6-3 at home Wednesday.

The Rams started the match by taking a 3-0 lead by sweeping doubles play. Alejandro Vial and Guilherme Lorencon teamed up to beat Parker Gregory and Kyle Clayton 8-2, Shaun Wintzell and Ricky Weghorst held on to beat Lee Gammon and Collin St. Clair 8-5, and the duo of Gustavo Godoi and Sam Perlmutter rallied to beat Kyle Herron and Trevor Scott 8-6.

Needing only two points clinch, the Rams split the singles action as Vial won 6-4, Weghorst rallied to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Lorencon made quick work of his opponent 6-4, 6-2. Perlmutter fell 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, Godoi lost 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, and Wintzell lost 4-6, 4-6.

Mobile moves to 6-1 on the season and next plays at home Saturday, March 15th at 9:00 am against GCAC foe Belhaven College.

Day One:

GULF SHORES, Ala-- The University of Mobile men's tennis team is on a roll in its first season of reinstatement, but the Rams' are facing tough competition at the first annual "Bash at the Beach."

The Rams enter the field 4-0 and started the tournament with a 5-2 victory over NCAA Div III LeTourneau University. Alejandro Vial teamed up with Guilherme Lorencon for a double's victory, and the duo of Ricky Weghorst and Shaun Wintzell picked up the other double's win for the Rams.

Mobile captured the victory with solid play in singles, as Vial, Wintzell and Gustavo Godoi did away with their respective opponents to pick up the team victory and move to 5-0 on the season.

Mobile then played 18th-ranked Shorter College to finish out day 1 and fell 5-1. Weghorst and Wintzell teamed up for the lone Rams' point. Mobile was on pace to pick up 3 other points before the game was called due to lack of light.

The Rams face Transylvania Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Univ of Mobile tennis facilities to finish the tournament. Weather forced the match to be moved from Tuesday to Wednesday. Spring Hill will face LeTourneau at 2:00 pm at UM Wednesday.
