UM Men's Tennis Signs First 5 for 07-08
MOBILE, Ala—The recently reinstated University of Mobile men’s tennis program announced the first 5 signees of the new era of tennis action.
The first player to sign on the dotted line was Fairhope native Shaun Wintzell. Wintzell will be transferring from Faulkner State where he went 10-4 and was district champion. Before attending Faulkner State, he went 40-5 at Fairhope High School and won sectional 3 out of 4 years.
“I’m very pleased to have Shaun Wintzell as our first signing since the reinstatement of our men’s tennis program,” Head Coach Uwe Tittl said. “Shaun’s desire on the count to win and his leadership will be great assets to the success of our men’s tennis team.”
In addition to his gaudy high school record, Wintzell reached the semifinals of the state tournament and was named one of the top 10 juniors in the state.
The Rams also added Samuel Perlmutter out of Orange Park, Florida. He previously attended St. Andrews College and Reinhardt College. At St. Andrews, he played basketball and tennis, and was named ITA Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year. Perlmutter only played basketball at Reinhardt and will bring intangibles on and off the court to the Rams.
“We’re excited to have signed Sam for the 07-08 season,” Tittl said. “Sam will be a great leader on and off the court, as well as academically.”
Sam was a member of the National Honor Society in high school, and part of the Honors Programs at Reinhardt and St. Andrews.
Mobile also brought in Guilherme Lorencon, Gustavo Godoi and Brandon Drayton. Drayton attended South Grand Prairie High School for 2 years where he won regionals his sophomore year, and Daphne High School for the final 2 years. He was also named to the All County Tennis Team.
Lorencon and Godoi are both experienced players who hail from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
