UM Softball Wins Top-25 Battle
THOMASVILLE, Ga—The 13th-ranked University of Mobile softball team started the 2008 season with a bang by sweeping #21 Thomas University by a combined score of 14-1 on the road. The Lady Rams won the opener 4-0 and finished the double header with an 10-1 win.
Ginger Reeser took the ball for Mobile in the opener and shut down the Lady NightHawks’ bats, while Mobile used the long ball to get their runs. Reeser (1-0) twirled 7 innings of 2-hit ball, while fanning 3.
On the offensive side, reigning NAIA 1st-Team All-American Yaicey Sojo went 2-for-3 with a homer and 2 RBI. Jennifer Gomez rounded out the top performers at the plate for the Lady Rams, whit a homer of her own. Sojo provided the go-ahead RBI in the 3rd for Mobile.
In the finale, true freshman Karla Rodriguez got the start for Mobile and picked up her first collegiate victory. Rodriguez (1-0) went the full 5 innings, while striking out 3 and limiting the NightHawks to 4 hits.
Sojo was again the hitting hero for Mobile in game 2, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with another homer. Taylor Lee Phillips and Jineth Pimentel added home runs to the Lady Rams’ power display, and Cristina Rodriguez, Gomez and Abby Campbell each went 2-for-3, with Rodriguez providing the go-ahead RBI.
Mobile is 2-0 on the young season and next plays at the Faulkner University Tournament in Montgomery, AL on Feb. 22 and 23rd.
