| ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -
On the ropes until the sixth inning the 2nd-ranked
University of Mobile Rams came from behind to defeat the
Owls of William Woods University 4-2 in game 9 of the Gulf
Coast Invitational held at the Sportsplex in Orange Beach,
Alabama.
Nicole Peters and
Kelly McClure both scored for the Owls in the bottom of the
second inning to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.
It was the
pitching of freshman phenom Samantha Frevert that kept the
Rams at bay through nearly six innings.
A sacrifice fly
by UM’s Christie Jackson scored Denisse Fuenmayor to give
the Rams a 3-2 lead. Fuenmayor (2-for-4), Meredith Tanner
(3-for-4 with two runs) and Sylvia Bedgood (2-for-4 with one
RBI) had the hot bats for Mobile.
Ann McLean
pitched five innings and Kirby Baxter got the win as she
came in during the sixth inning. Baxter held the Owls
hitless while striking out five in nearly two innings of
work.
The Rams improve
to 12-3 on the season and will now play University of
Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
The Owls drop their second game of the day and fall to 4-4
overall. They will complete pool play on Saturday as they
play Science and Arts at 11 a.m.
