UM wins opener of Gulf Coast Invitational

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - On the ropes until the sixth inning the 2nd-ranked University of Mobile Rams came from behind to defeat the Owls of William Woods University 4-2 in game 9 of the Gulf Coast Invitational held at the Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Nicole Peters and Kelly McClure both scored for the Owls in the bottom of the second inning to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.

It was the pitching of freshman phenom Samantha Frevert that kept the Rams at bay through nearly six innings.

A sacrifice fly by UM’s Christie Jackson scored Denisse Fuenmayor to give the Rams a 3-2 lead. Fuenmayor (2-for-4), Meredith Tanner (3-for-4 with two runs) and Sylvia Bedgood (2-for-4 with one RBI) had the hot bats for Mobile.

Ann McLean pitched five innings and Kirby Baxter got the win as she came in during the sixth inning. Baxter held the Owls hitless while striking out five in nearly two innings of work.

The Rams improve to 12-3 on the season and will now play University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 7 p.m.

The Owls drop their second game of the day and fall to 4-4 overall. They will complete pool play on Saturday as they play Science and Arts at 11 a.m.
