Lady Rams Hand Trojans First Losses
MOBILE, Ala-- The 6th-ranked University of Mobile softball team handed 4th-ranked Trevecca Nazarene its first losses of the season by sweeping Thursday's double header by scores of 2-1 and 10-2.
In the opener, the Lady Trojans opened the game by loading the bases and getting a RBI single off the bat of Sammy Simon, but Karla Rodriguez worked out of trouble to make sure they would get no more.
While Trevecca pitcher Brittiany Johnson cruised, allowing only 4 hits and fanning 10, the Lady Trojans again loaded the bases with only 1 out in the 5th. Nikki Madden came on in relief and got out of the jam with a ground out and strikeout.
Mobile then started to work the count and get to Johnson, capitalizing in the 7th inning. A hit-batsman, double and walk loaded the bases with nobody out in the final frame and then Johnson uncorked a wild pitch to allow Abby Campbell to scamper home with the tying run. Two batters later, Cristina Rodriguez laced an opposite field walk-off RBI single for the victory.
Game 2 was the complete opposite, as the Mobile bats went to work early and often, pounding out 14 hits in the 10-2 victory. The Lady Rams plated 7 runs over the first 2 innings of action, including 5 two-out tallies to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
Ginger Reeser cruised on the mound, scattering 7 hits, fanning 5 and limiting the Lady Trojan offense to only 2 runs. Yaicey Sojo finished with 3 hits in the game, while Taylor Lee Phillips, Rodriguez, Suarez, Jennifer Gomez and Kelyn Mendoza all collected 2 hits.
Mobile improves to 17-3 on the season and next plays at conference foe William Carey University Thursday, March 27th at 4:00 pm.
