No. 4 Thomas upends top-ranked Rams

THOMASVILLE, Ga.-- No. 1-ranked University of Mobile dropped a softball doubleheader to No. 4-ranked Thomas University 5-3 and 7-3 Tuesday afternoon in Thomasville, Georgia.

Thomas pitcher Kathy Andrijiezyn scattered eight hits to win the opener, then tossed two innings of relief in the nightcap.

"We're not going to make any excuses," said head coach Becky Clark.  "We simply did not get the job done today.  More importantly, I didn't do my job.  The good news is we are a better team than what we showed today.  We will regroup and hopefully come back stronger."

The Rams' Evelyne Pare and Angelica Yrigoyen had three hits apiece in the opener and Pare and Holly Knowles had two hits apiece in the second game for Mobile.

Mobile took a 1-0 lead in the first game when Pare doubled to lead off the game and came around to score on a Yrigoyen RBI single.

The Rams again briefly captured the lead in the fourth inning when Karine Gagne scored on a Pare single giving Mobile a 2-1 lead.  However, Thomas scored one in the fourth to even things up and added three more in the fifth to take command of the game.

Linden Jones got the loss after pitching six innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on nine base hits.  Jones struck out four.

In the second game, Thomas jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings.  Mobile rallied for two runs in the top of the fourth inning but Thomas put the game away with three runs in the fifth inning.  Starting Mobile pitcher Kirby Baxter was tagged with the loss after going five innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 base hits.  Baxter struck out one batter and allowed two home runs.

Mobile returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 30 at home against Taylor University.  The doubleheader is set to begin at 4 p.m.
