Lady Rams Split With Birmingham Southern
BIRMINGHAM, Ala-- The 11th-ranked University of Mobile softball team split a non-conference double header at NCAA opponent Birmingham Southern Tuesday, dropping the opener 2-1 and picking up a 5-2 victory in the finale.
In the opener, the Lady Rams struck first with a single tally in the 1st inning when Anadys Suarez singled home Yaicey Sojo, but that's all Mobile would get, as Birmingham Southern's Betheny Reynoldson allowed only 4 hits over the final 6 innings of play to finish with 7 innings of work, 7 hits, 1 run and 5 strikeouts in the victory.
The Lady Panthers gave Reynoldson the victory by plating a pair of runs in the 1st before Karla Rodriguez and Ginger Reeser combined to shut them down the rest of the way.
A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Lady Panthers and then Anne Lawrence provided the winning hit with a 2-run single.
Rodriguez was charged with the loss after working 4 innings, fanning 3 and holding the Lady Panthers to 4 hits. Anadys Suarez went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and Abby Campbell finished 1-for-2.
Game 2: Mobile 5 - Birmingham Southern 2
The Lady Rams found a little more offense and got a solid pitching effort from Nikki Madden to pick up the game 2 victory and salvage the split.
Madden moved to 9-2 on the season by going the distance and limiting the Lady Panther bats to 2 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 3. The Mobile offense took advantage of 4 errors to pick up the 5-2 win.
In the third, the Lady Rams capitalized on a pair of errors to plate 3 runs as Jessica McIntyre started the frame with a double and Anadys Suarez added a run-scoring single. After tacking on another unearned run in the 5th, Jineth Pimentel capped the scoring with a RBI single in the 7th.
Pimentel finished 3-for-4 and Suarez finished 1-for-3. The Lady Rams next play at home Thursday, April 10th when 7th-ranked William Carey University visits for a 4:00 GCAC double header.
