No. 7 WCU Sweeps No. 14 Mobile

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- Seventh-ranked William Carey University polished off a GCAC double-header sweep of the 14th-ranked University of Mobile Lady Rams with a 1-0 decision Thursday.

The story of the game was wasted opportunities, as the Lady Rams stranded 11 runners and failed to take advantage of 6 Lady Crusaders miscues.

William Carey scored the lone run of the game with two outs in the 1st inning, when Judy Barber followed a Jill Wedgeworth double with a run-scoring hit.

Melanie Bush (12-1) got the win for William Carey with 6.1 innings of shutout ball, while Fuller grabbed her 13th save, recording the final two outs. Mindy Scott was the tough-luck loser after allowing one run on four hits through 6 innings.

Desiree Truett went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Mobile. The Lady Rams (26-9, 3-5) host William Carey Tuesday, April 14 at 3 pm.

Game 1: Mobile 4 - William Carey 5

The 7th-ranked William Carey University Lady Crusaders held serve at home by taking down 14th-ranked University of Mobile 5-4 in game one of Thursday’s Gulf Coast Athletic Conference double-header.

After a scoreless 1st for both teams, the game went back-and-forth over the next three frames, with the Lady Crusaders getting the last score in.

The two teams traded runs in the 2nd when Mobile’s Taylor Lee Phillips stroked a 2-out, RBI single and William Carey’s Larke Nightengale produced a 2-out, RBI double. After the Lady Rams retook the lead with an RBI from Jineth Pimentel in the top of the 3rd, the Lady Crusaders continued their 2-out magic in the bottom of the 3rd when Judy Barber cranked a 2-out, 3-run homer to left after being behind in the count 0-2.

Mobile answered right back in the 4th to tie the game at 4-4 when Desiree Truett knocked a 2-run single to left, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the frame and prevented any more damage. William Carey then tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the 4th to end the scoring on a RBI groundout from Tan Montgomery.

The Lady Rams threatened in the 6th, placing runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out, but the Lady Crusaders called in bullpen ace Brittany Fuller, who retired the next two batters and then set Mobile down in order in the 7th.

Kelsey Jo Smith (10-2) picked up the win by going 5.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits with 4 strikeouts. Fuller picked up her 12th save with 1.2 innings of perfect ball. Pickette (18-2) suffered only her second loss of the season after giving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 6 innings.

Truett, Phillips and Kirstyn Joiner all had two-hit games for Mobile, with Truett driving in a pair of runs. Barber finished 2-for-3 with the 3-run homer for William Carey.
