Lady Rams Sweep Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala-- The 15th-ranked University of Mobile softball team closed out the 2009 regular season by sweeping rival Spring Hill College Tuesday. Mobile took the opener 4-1 and then won the finale 9-1 in five innings due to the run-rule.

Leslie Pickette (21-3) picked up her 21st victory of the year in the opener by limiting the Lady Badgers to one run on four hits in a complete-game effort. Pickette fanned five and walked one. Her lone mistake came in the top of the 5th when Spring Hill's Jessica Whidden hit a solo home run to left for a short-lived 1-0 lead.

After stranding six over the first four innings, Mobile responded with two runs apiece in the 5th and 6th innings. After Brittany Dowdle sacrificed Abby Campbell and Desiree Truett into scoring position, Jineth Pimentel hit a 2-run double to right-center for the winning tallies. Truett added a 2-run double in the 6th for Mobile.

Abby Campbell finished 4-for-4 at the top of the Mobile order, while Truett finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and Pimentel finished 1-for-4 with 2 RBI. Samantha Brooks took the loss for Spring Hill after surrendering three earned runs in 6 innings.

In game two, Mobile pounded out 15 hits and started the game with a four-run 1st inning. Mindy Scott (4-3) got the win after allowing one run on seven hits in the complete-game effort. Brittany Abate took the loss after allowing six earned on 15 hits in 4+ innings.

Campbell finished 3-for-4, Truett and Ally Scott went 2-for-3 and Tess Ackerman finished 3-for-3 with 3 RBI for Mobile. Monica Zeringue and Brooke Turlich had two hits each to lead Spring Hill. In that 1st inning, the first five Lady Rams reached and Tess Ackerman had the big blow with a 2-run single to put the Lady Rams up 3-0, before a Spring Hill error tacked on another run.

The Lady Rams then complimented that four-run 1st with another four-spot in the 4th. With a runner on first and two outs, the Lady Rams got four straight hits, including a 2-run double from Ally Scott.

Mobile (31-10, 6-6) and Spring Hill (15-30, 4-8) will play in the 2009 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Friday-Saturday at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
