FAIRHOPE, Ala. – The University of Mobile softball
team (44-9) overcame an early 2-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the
bottom of the first en route to defeating Spring Hill College 7-2 in the
GCAC/Independent Sectional Tournament final. Mobile defeated Belhaven
College 1-0, earlier in the day, to advance to the final.
Stephanie Landrum (2-for-3) ripped a two RBI triple
to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Meredith Tanner (2-for-3) and
Christie Jackson (2-for-3) each singled, in the inning as well, to drive
in runs to give Mobile a 4-2 advantage.
Two more runs in the bottom of the third and a solo
shot by Denisse Fuenmayor in the bottom of the sixth, which visited the
third row of cars in the Founders Park parking lot, punctuated a
dominating performance by the nationally 4th-ranked Rams.
Linden Jones (9-1) scattered five hits, gave up one
earned run and struck out six in seven innings of work to notch her ninth
win of the season.
Kirby Baxter (18-4) won a pitcher’s duel earlier in
the day against Belhaven as she pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out
11 to lower her ERA to 1.40.
Belhaven’s Lyndsey Gavulic gave up only two hits, one
earned run and one walk while striking out 10 in the close loss.
Hitless through five innings, the Rams finally got
their lone run on the board as Denisse Fuenmayor drove in Brenda Box on a
sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the sixth.
