Mobile, Ala. – The University of
Mobile softball team (44-5) opened their conference tournament
with a 6-0 win over Belhaven College. Playing in the first game
of the GCAC/Independent tournament held at Founders Park in
Fairhope, Alabama, Belhaven had the daunting task of winning
back-to-back games to avoid being placed in the loser’s bracket
after defeating William Carey 2-0. Following a tough win, the
Blazers ran into the 2nd-ranked Rams who got another
tremendous performance out of senior pitcher Missy Passley.
Passley struck out 10 while only giving up
one hit, and one walk in seven innings of work.

The Rams jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in
the 1st inning. With Brenda Box (2-for-3) and Sylvia
Bedgood on the corners and only one out, Bedgood came into score
as Box was on the losing end of a double steal attempt.
Aggressive on the bases, the Rams got
caught stealing three times, something that concerned Coach
Becky Clark.
“We need to clean up our base running,”
Coach Clark said. “We need to be more heads up with what we’re
doing, and that’s what I told my kids after the game. Today it
didn’t hurt us, but in a different type of game it will. Other
than that I thought we got good pitching, great defense and hit
the ball well.”
Top performances were also turned in by
Christie Jackson (3-for-3 with 2 RBIs), and Maria Soto (2-for-3
with 1 RBI).
The Rams
will play again at 10 a.m. against 4th-ranked Thomas
University who defeated Spring Hill in the other evening game.
“We expected to be playing a good team
tomorrow,” Coach Clark said. “Whether it’s Spring Hill or
Thomas, we’re playing a good team. There are no cake walks;
we’ve got to come to play tomorrow.”
