William Carey Rallies Past Mobile
GULF SHORES, Ala—The 6th-ranked William Carey University Lady Crusaders used a 7th-inning rally to beat 15th-ranked Mobile 7-6 on day two of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex Saturday.
The win drops Mobile to an elimination game versus Belhaven College at 3:00 pm, while William Carey is sitting in the driver’s seat and will play the winner of that matchup in the title game at 5:15.
Melanie Bush picked up the win for Carey with a complete-game effort. She scattered 10 hits and allowed three earned, while fanning and walking two. Mindy Scott took the loss for Mobile after allowing three runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Lady Rams took control early when they batted around and used a pair of 1st-inning Lady Crusader errors to go up 5-0. Jineth Pimentel started the scoring with a RBI-single and Kirstyn Joiner and Abby Campbell added RBI’s in the inning.
Carey closed the gap with a three-spot in the 3rd thanks to a Mobile error. Jill Wedgeworth and Jeana Erickson had RBI’s in the frame. After the teams traded single tallies in the 5th, the stage was set for William Carey’s comeback.
Scott had thrown 1.1 scoreless in relief for the Lady Rams, but the Lady Crusader bats caught up to her in the 7th. Nikki Sanders led off with a pinch-hit solo home run to right field, and two batters later Erickson struck again with a 2-run double to chase Scott and win the game.
Erickson finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBI, while Wedgeworth was 2-for-4. Abby Campbell, Brittany Dowdle, Jineth Pimentel and Ally Scott all produced two-hit efforts for the Lady Rams.
