Mobile, Ala. – A pitcher’s duel to
the very end, University of Mobile’s Missy Passley (22-4)
outlasted Venezuelan national team pitcher Mariangee Bogado, as
she helped lead Mobile to a 1-0 win over Thomas University in
their second game of the GCAC/Independent conference tournament.
Striking out 14 while giving up only three hits and three walks
in seven innings of work, the senior from Flagstaff, Arizona
helped the nationally 2nd-ranked Rams to a 45-5
record and an opportunity to play for the conference tournament
championship this evening.
“That’s the best I’ve seen Missy pitch,”
Coach Becky Clark said. “She had everything working and was
very, very smart with what she was doing. I thought [Meredith]
Tanner did a great job behind the plate calling for her. They
did a really good job and we were able to squeak one through to
win the ball game. And I’ll say it again; it was a great team
effort. It took all 18 of us to win this game. “
Equally impressive was the Nighthawk’s star
pitcher, who came back on one night’s rest to give up only five
hits, one earned run, and one walk while striking out four in
six innings of work.
“She did a great job,” Coach Clark said of
Bogado’s tough performance. “In games like this it’s a matter of
who’s going to make a mistake or poke something through. I told
my girls that this is what they’ll see at the national
tournament. It’ll come down to who outlasts who and who gets the
job done.”
Mobile got their only run of the game in
the bottom of the fifth with a Sylvia Bedgood RBI single that
drove in Molly Walker from second base.
“I think we’re being very smart right now,”
the pleased Rams coach said. “These kids have gelled together
tremendously. The kids are playing hard, and I don’t have to
motivate them. I tell them to get here at 8:30 and they come
here at 8 a.m. They just want it. There’s no substitution for a
group of kids who have talent and want to win something. These
guys are going out, playing hard and they’re determined to get
it done.”
