Mobile, Ala. – The 2nd-ranked
University of Mobile softball team (46-5) defeated Thomas
University 2-0 to win the GCAC/Independent tournament
championship, held at Founders Field in Fairhope, Alabama.
Playing the Nighthawks for the second time of the day, the Rams
had an immediate advantage in the nightcap as they played a
Thomas team that was coming off a 17 inning, 5-1 marathon
victory over Spring Hill College.
“This was just the icing on the cake,”
Rams’ coach Becky Clark said. “I thinking we needed to win this
one because they played 17 innings. It’s a pride game and we
found a way to get it done.”
With one out, Maria Soto (2-for-3) got the
ball rolling for the Rams as she singled to get on base in the
bottom of the sixth. A Meredith Tanner (1-for-2) walk set up a
two on with one out situation for Teal Boothe that she
capitalized on with a two RBI single up the left center gap.
Coming into pitch the last three innings,
Missy Passley forced two ground outs and a pop fly to seal the
championship for the Rams.
“I don’t want to think about softball
tonight and tomorrow,” an elated and pleased Mobile coach said.
“I told the kids, ‘let’s just enjoy this.’ We’ll wait until
Monday to look back and see what we need to learn from this
experience. We worked hard all year and this is the fun part.
I’m happy for them and proud of them.”
