(Live Stats)

DECATUR, Ala—The University of Mobile softball team punched its ticket to the next round of the 2008 NAIA Softball National Championships by eight-run ruling Simon Fraser 8-0 in 6 innings Saturday evening.

The win makes Mobile 3-1 in pool play and ensures the Lady Rams will join Simon Fraser as the two teams to advance out of Pool C into the eight-team double elimination bracket that will take place Monday-Wednesday and determine the national champion.

Much like the previous two victories at the tourney, the Lady Rams used some thunder to back brilliant starting pitching to pick up the “w”.

Ginger Reeser (21-2) went the distance and limited Simon Fraser to 6 hits, while fanning 7 to pick up the win and remain undefeated in 2008 postseason play.

With the game scoreless through two frames, the Lady Rams blew it wide open with a five-spot in the top of the 3rd inning and cruised from there.

Cristina Rodriguez and Anadys Suarez got the scoring started with back-to-back RBI singles and Keyln Mendoza followed two batters later with a 2-out, 3-run blast to stake Mobile to the 5-0 lead.

Yaicey Sojo continued the Lady Rams’ power display with a solo shot in the 4th inning and then a pair unearned runs ended the game in the 6th inning.

Sojo finished 2-for-4 with a homer, Suarez finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, Mendoza finished 1-for-2 with a 3-run homer and Taylor Lee Phillips went 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored. Sojo and Mendoza both have three homers at the tournament.

Game 3: Lady Rams fall to defending National Champs

DECATUR, Ala— Small-ball and miscues doomed the University of Mobile softball team to its firstloss at the 2008 NAIA Softball National Championships in Decatur, AL as Oklahoma City walked away with a 7-4 victory. The loss puts the Lady Rams record at the tournament at 2-1 with one game in pool play remaining.

The game started out harmlessly enough as the Stars of Oklahoma City went down 1-2-3 in the 1st inning, but then the game turned for the worse for Mobile.

A hit-batsman and error set the Stars up with a pair of runners on base and then Mindy Crabaugh smacked a 2-run double and Katie Carroll followed with a run-scoring single to put the Lady Rams in an 0-3 hole.

Mobile got a run back in the bottom of the 3rd on a RBI-single from the hot-hitting Jennifer Gomez, but the Stars came right back and accounted for the winning tallies in the 4th inning. The Lady Rams were only able to manage that one run through the first six innings despite drawing 10 walks in the ball game.

In that 4th inning, the Stars turned to small ball, swiping four bags and scoring on a double-steal and a suicide squeeze. Mobile finally got the bats going with 3 runs in the 6th inning as Kelyn Mendoza and Yaicey Sojo homered for the second straight day, but it was too little to late.

Nikki Madden took the loss, allowing 5 earned runs and 8 hits over 7 innings of work, while fanning five. Julie Harvey got the win for Oklahoma City by allowing 1 run over 2.1 innings of work.

Sojo finished 2-for-3 with the solo homer for Mobile, while Crabaugh and Laurin Hess finished with 2 hits apiece for the Stars.

Game 2: Mobile uses pitching and timely hitting to pick up a win

DECATUR, Ala—The University of Mobile softball team picked up a big win Friday evening to move to 2-0 in pool play at the 2008 NAIA Softball National Championships by downing Columbia College 4-2.

Great pitching and timely hitting was the theme in Friday’s opening win over Walsh University and the same rang true in the nightcap victory as Ginger Reeser again cruised on the mound, and homers ignited the offense.

Columbia struck first with a pair of runs in the 1st inning thanks to a sac fly and a Mobile error. The Lady Rams answered back with a trio of runs in the 3rd inning as Kelyn Mendoza and Jineth Pimentel lead off the frame with back-to-back solo homers. Yaicey Sojo provided the winning tally with a sac fly to plate Abby Campbell.

Reeser (20-2) picked up the victory by going the distance and limiting Columbia to 5 hits and 1 earned run. The lefty fanned four and walked only one. The senior from Monticello, IL is now 7-0 in the 2008 postseason, picking up all of Mobile’s victories.

Sojo finished 1-for-3, Mendoza finished 2-for-3 with a solo homer, and Jineth Pimentel finished 1-for-3 with a homer.

The Lady Rams (38-7) will finish pool play Saturday against Oklahoma City at 10:00 am and Simon Fraser at 5:30 pm.

The top two teams from the four pools at the tournament advance to an eight-team double-elimination bracket Monday-Wednesday to determine the champion.
