Decatur, Ala. – It was nothing but
Sweet Home Alabama, as the No. 1-ranked softball team in
the country paraded in the NAIA National Tournament opening
ceremonies at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, AL.
Greeted by fans, both local and from around the country, the 20
teams competing in this year’s tournament will begin play
Friday, May 16 with the top-seeded Rams getting their first
taste of action at 5 p.m. when they play the winner of the
Marian (Ind.) versus Walsh (Ohio) game.
Mobile enters the tournament with a 49-5-1
record, a second consecutive Region 13 title and the familiarity
of playing here on five previous occasions. Accustomed to the
area, the fields and other intangible dynamics, the Rams could
almost consider Wilson Morgan a second home.
It is with this almost home field
advantage that the Rams will look to finally capture what has
evaded the perennial powerhouse since the program’s inception
over a decade ago; an NAIA National Championship. To do so, they
will have to defeat fellow perennial powerhouses such as Point
Loma Nazarene (Calif.), Simon Fraser (B.C.) and three-time
defending national champion Oklahoma City.
