(Live Stats) - (Bracket)

DECATUR, Ala— Ginger Reeser out-dueled Marissa Gonzalez as the University of Mobile softball team moved into the driver’s seat at the 2008 NAIA Softball National Championship with a 2-0 victory over Lubbock Christian.

Reeser (24-2) fired a two-hitter and allowed only five balls out of the infield all game to hand Lubbock Christian it’s first loss of the tournament.

Gonzalez fired a gem for Lubbock Christian, allowing only three Mobile hits, but the Lady Rams were able to turn those three hits into just-enough offense to make a loser out of Gonzalez who finished with 5 strikeouts and 2 runs allowed in 6 innings of work.

The game was scoreless through 3.5 innings of action and featured a 3.5-hour rain delay, before Mobile finally pushed a run across. Yaicey Sojo delivered a leadoff single in the 4th, and after moving to 2nd base on a sac bunt from Abby Campbell, scored the first run of the day on a 2-out base hit to right field by Cristina Rodriguez.

Jennifer Gomez stepped up to the plate and smacked the first pitch she saw in the 5th inning over the left field fence for an insurance run. Sojo, Rodriguez and Gomez collected the lone hits for the Lady Rams.

With the victory, Mobile (42-8) advances to Wednesday’s 12:30 championship game. Lubbock will face the Cal Baptist/Point Loma winner tomorrow at 10:00 am, and that winner will advance to face the Lady Rams.

Game 2: Lady Rams Use 3 Hits To Beat #1 Cal Baptist

DECATUR, Ala—The University of Mobile softball team was limited to three hits against California Baptist at the NAIA National Championships, but that is all the Lady Rams needed to pull out a 3-2 victory and remain in the winner’s bracket.

One of those hits came in the 1st inning, when a single by Jessica McIntyre moved Abby Campbell to 3rd base, where she came in to score the first run of the ball game on a sacrifice fly by Cristina Rodriguez.

The last two hits came in the 4th inning to stake the Lady Rams to a 3-0 lead as Kelyn Mendoza smacked her fourth homer of the tournament, a solo shot, and Yaicey Sojo drove a RBI double to right field to cap the scoring.

Ginger Reeser (23-2) continued her impressive work on the mound for the Lady Rams, picking up the win with a complete game effort, limiting Cal Baptist to four hits and a pair of unearned runs, which came in the 5th. Reeser was in command all game, keeping the Lancer bats in check, as 17 of the 21 outs were recorded in the infield.

Sojo finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and Kelyn Mendoza finished 1-for-3 with a solo homer. The Lady Rams (41-8) play Tuesday at 3:00 against Lubbock Christian. The winner of that ball game will advance to the Championship game Wednesday at 12:30, while the loser falls to a 10:00 am elimination game Wednesday.

Game 1: Lady Rams Outlast Point Loma 6-4

DECATUR, Ala—The University of Mobile softball tallied six runs on nine hits to win its opening game 6-4 versus Point Loma Nazarene in the championship bracket at the 2008 NAIA Softball National Championship Monday morning.

The Lady Rams struck first with three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and then plated three runs over the 5th and 6th innings to pick up the victory.

After Yaicey Sojo singled and Jessica McIntyre walked to set the Lady Rams up with a pair of runners on and 1 out, Cristina Rodriguez and Anadys Suarez produced back-to-back RBI singles for a 2-0 lead. Kelyn Mendoza followed two batters later with a 2-out, RBI base knock for the 3-0 lead.

Ginger Reeser shut Point Loma down for the first 3 innings of action, but the Sealions finally got to her in the 4th as Allie Boeckelman smacked a 2-out, 2-run double to cut the lead to 3-2.

Mobile wasted little time in answering the tallies, as a pair of walks in the bottom of the 5th inning turned into the winning runs, when Rodriguez roped a 2-run double down the right field line for a 5-2 lead.

The Sealions threatened in the 6th inning as three hits and a 2-run single from Boeckelman chased Reeser, but Nikki Madden came in and 1.2 hitless innings to end the ball game.

Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, Taylor Lee Phillips finished 2-for-3, and Yaicey Sojo and Jessica McIntyre both scored a pair of runs.
