MOBILE FRESHMAN CONTINUES TO DOMINATE IN 1-0 OVER OLIVET

DECATUR, Ala. – While it was hard to imagine Mobile pitcher, Kirby Baxter, surpassing her previous outing as she fanned seven batters while giving up only one hit and one walk in a 5-2 win over the University of Mary (N.D.), the freshman had another outstanding game by striking out 14 batters in a 1-0 win over 8th-seeded Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in the final day of action at the 23rd Annual NAIA National Softball Championships held at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Alabama.

A truly great pitcher’s duel between two freshmen, Olivet Tiger pitcher Emily Johnston turned in a solid outing as she gave up four hits and four walks in seven innings of work.

The only run in the game came in the top of the sixth as Meredith Tanner hit an RBI single to bring in Maria Soto.

The Rams who have taken the long road to get to the championship by playing seven games, will now take on 2nd-seeded Simon Fraser University (B.C.) (36-3) for the National Championship. With the Clan not having lost a game, Mobile will have to come up with two straight wins to lay claim to the title.

Mobile, who ended Olivet’s season with an outstanding 61-13 record, will have a two hour break before taking the field at 5 p.m. Central Standard Time for Game 1 of the NAIA Softball Championships.
