SIMON FRASER WINS ITS FIRST TITLE SINCE
1999
DECATUR, Ala. – After dropping the
first championship game 2-1 to the University of Mobile
(55-7-1), Simon Fraser University (B.C.) (37-4) won the nightcap
3-1 to capture their first championship title since 1999 at the
23rd Annual NAIA Softball National Championships held
at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex in Decatur, Alabama.
Tonight was truly a fierce battle between
All-American pitchers Missy Passley and Erin Thomas who both
gave outstanding performances. Thomas, who finished her season
with a 17-1 record, gave up four hits, one walk and one earned
run while striking out nine in seven innings of work. Thomas was
also outstanding at the plate she went 2-for-3.
All-Tournament Pitcher, Missy Passley,
gave up three hits, and three walks while striking out four.
The Clan did all of their damage in the
bottom of the second inning as Haylee Rempel, Cari Irwin and
Rachel Schill each scored on unearned runs.
While Mobile’s Denisse Fuenmayor scored on
an error by Simon Fraser first baseman Danica Payette, it was
not enough as Passley ended her season with a 28-6 record and
the Rams will have to wait another year before laying claim to
the coveted national title.
