UM Athletes Qualify For Olympics

MOBILE, Ala-- When the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing begin, University of Mobile fans will be able to see some familiar faces.

Current Lady Rams Yaicey Sojo and Cristina Rodriguez, Assistant Coach Maribel Riera, and former players Denisse Fuenmayor and Maria Soto all helped the Venezuelan National Softball Team qualify for the Olympics. Rodriguez will not be able to participate in the Olympics due to an injury.

University of Mobile Olympians
Yaicey Sojo plays centerfield for the Lady Rams and does the same for the Venezuelan National Team. 2007 was Sojo's first season in Mobile, but she made it memorable by putting up some gaudy numbers and winning NAIA National Player of the Week honors. She posted a .436 batting average and got on base 56% of the time. She also finished with 14 homers and 17 steals while serving as the leadoff batter in the lineup.
Maribel Riera is entering her 1st year as full-time assistant coach at the University of Mobile. She is no stranger to the school, having played on the 2006 NAIA National Championship squad, while hitting at a .364 clip. She also slugged .673, swatted 14 homers and drove in 51 runs for the Lady Rams.
Maria Soto was a member of the University of Mobile softball team from 1998-03 and put up prolific numbers for the Lady Rams. Soto produced a career .366 batting average for the Lady Rams. Totaled 264 hits in her career at Mobile. Swatted 21 homers over her career.
Denisse Fuenmayor played for the Lady Rams from 2001-04 and posted a career .376 batting average. Finished her career with 259 hits at Mobile.
