UM Athletes Earn GCAC Honors

HATTIESBURG, Miss—The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference released the GCAC Player of the Week awards for the week ending March 8th. The University of Mobile had five athletes honored – Leslie Pickette, Taylor Lee Phillips, Claudia Borges, Maegan Rice and Cameron Smith.

Leslie Pickette earned the GCAC Softball Pitcher of the Week award after racking up a 6-0 record on a week that saw Mobile go 8-2. Pickette went the distance in all five starts and picked up another victory with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief against Indiana-Southeast. Her best outing came when she fanned 10 and allowed only 3 hits in 8 innings of work to beat No. 9 Olivet Nazarene. She also picked up wins over GCAC foe Belhaven, No. 12 Bethel and No. 15 Shorter.

Taylor Lee Phillips was named GCAC Softball Player of the Week after batting .414 and driving in 11 runs on the week for Mobile. The senior played a huge role in the Lady Rams sweep of conference foe Belhaven College, providing the game-winning RBI in each win. In the opener, she ripped a 2-out, 3-run double in the 4th. In the finale, Phillips produced a 2-out, RBI-single for the winning run. She also produced 2-hit games against No. 12 Bethel and No. 15 Shorter.

Claudia Borges was named Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after sweeping her opponents in the Lady Rams’ 7-2 victory over Piedmont College. Borges cruised 8-0 in doubles and then picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory in singles play for Mobile. The Lady Rams are 1-2 on the season and host rival Spring Hill Tuesday, March 10 at 3 pm.

Maegan Rice was named Women’s Golf Player of the Week after leading the Lady Rams to a 1st-place finish at the Spring Hill Badger Invite. The Junior carded a 3-over 75 in the opening round and then finished with a +10 82 in the final round to card a 157 and finish 1st among individuals.

Cameron Smith was named Men’s Golf Player of the Week after winning individual honors at the Spring Hill Badger Invite. Smith carded a 4-over par 76 in the opening round and then closed out the tournament with a +2 74 to take top honors. The Rams finished 5th as a team.
