Rams Selected As GCAC's Best

HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The University of Mobile is the winner of the 2009 Thomas Howell Cup, as announced by the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference today.

The trophy goes to the program in the GCAC with the best all-around athletics program. Teams earn points based on how they finished in the various sports, and Mobile led the way with 42 points for the 2008-09 season. The Rams beat second-place Belhaven College by 5.5 points.

This marks the 18th time that the Rams have won the trophy that has been handed out since 1986. Louisiana College and William Carey split the honor in that inaugural year. Mobile has won five straight trophies.

Mobile participates in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball, men's and women's golf, softball and men's and women's tennis.

The UM men's soccer team won the GCAC Championship and advanced to the Elite 8 in the NAIA National Tournament, while the volleyball program also won the GCAC Championship and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament for the second straight year.

The men's and women's golf teams both won their respective GCAC Titles, while both tennis squads finished second in the conference.
