Rams Sweep GCAC Weekly Honors
HATTIESBURG, Miss-- The University swept the GCAC player of the week awards for the week ending November 15, as announced by the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tuesday.
Jason Williams was named Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, while Ruben Diaz was named Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Both players were instrumental in vaulting the Rams to a pair of wins and a berth in the 2009 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship. Williams posted a 3-save shutout of No. 9 William Carey. Diaz posted 2 goals and 1 assist in the win over the Crusaders and then tallied Mobile's first goal in the 2-1 win over Asbury to win the Unaffiliated Championship.
The UM volleyball team had four athletes honored after going 4-0 to win the GCAC Tournament and secure a bid to nationals. Whitney Knight was named Player of the Week after totaling 64 kills while hitting .397. She also added 41 digs for Mobile (24-11). Paula Stilkey was named Hitter of the Week after hitting .417 with 40 kills, 25 digs and 7 blocks. Heather Schierer was named Libero of the Week after totaling 25 digs and being perfect on serve receptions. Lastly, Melody Tenney was named Setter of the Week after posting 165 assists, including a season-high 55 against Loyola.
Ji Kimbrough was named Men's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Rams to a 75-72 win at Faulkner University. Kimbrough put up a team-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the win.
Gerica Johnson was named Women's Basketball Player of the Week after leading Mobile to a win over No. 22 Auburn-Montgomery with 30 points and 11 boards. The senior also added 4 steals, while knocking down 9-of-10 free throw attempts. |
