UM Volleyball Opens Campaign With Scrimmage
MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile volleyball team began their 2007 season with a scrimmage at home versus NCAA-affiliated West Alabama.
The Lady Rams dropped the match 4 games to 1, but the team was in every game and the scrimmage was a good warm up for their season opener coming up August 28th at home versus University of South Alabama at 7:30.
Game 1 was back-and-forth all the way with neither team able to pull away by more than 2 points. After a 26-26 tie, West Alabama scored the final 4 for the 30-26 victory. Mobile trailed most of game 2 after leading 4-1 early, and the Lady Tigers rolled to a 30-21 victory.
Mobile took a close game 3, 30-28 before dropping the final 2 games of the match, 28-30 and 24-30.
But, in a scrimmage the final result isn't want's important, but it is a chance for coaches to assess the players and the players to get more meaningful practice in.
"Our defense looked much better than last year and our offense was alot stronger as well," Assistant Coach Amber Campbell said. "While those areas stood out, there's reason for optimism about our offense because we could see it progressing."
Following a 31-7 record in only their 2nd season of competition in 2006 and a regular season Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship, the Lady Rams are already getting noticed. In the first Region XIII rankings of the 2007 season, Mobile is 3rd behind Lee University and Berry College. Those two teams finished the 2006 season ranked #17 and 20, respectively in the NAIA Top-25.
