Lady Rams Drop Opener At Home To South Alabama
MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile volleyball team dropped their 2007 season opener 1-3 at home to the University of South Alabama.
South Alabama led all of game 1 and eventually pulled out an opening game 30-22 victory, and then Mobile finally took a lead, 11-10, and went on to a 30-24 victory to tie the match at 1 game apiece in Game 2.
Games 3 and 4 were close, but the Lady Jaguars pulled them out 30-26 and 30-27 to take the match and even their season record at 1-1.
Assistant Coach Amber Campbell was pleased with the effort overall, but noticed a few things that needed work.
"We were pleased with our overall performance, but we need to improve our serving game," Coach Campbell said in reference to the team's 17 service errors.
The coaches said a large part of that is mental toughness and "having the confidence to go for the big serve. Jon and Amber Campbell also noted that the incoming players stepped up.
"The freshmen (Jessica Bodkin and Alyson Kovacs) stepped up and played a big role for us," Campbell said. Kovacs finished with 15 assists and 6 digs, while Bodkin added 5 kills and 2 digs.
Whitney Knight and Syretta Baldwin led the way with 11 and 13 kills, respectively, while Nicole Stokes paced the team with 25 assists.
Mobile will next play at the John Brown University Tournament in Arkansas and take on John Brown University Friday, August 31st at 2:00 pm.
