Lady Rams Remain Perfect
ROME, Ga--- 23rd-ranked University of Mobile volleyball team improved to 9-0 on the season by polishing off a perfect run at the Berry College Tournament with victories over Birmingham Southern and Berry College Saturday.
Mobile opened the final day by rallying to defeat NCAA-Div III Birmingham Southern 3-2 (21-25, 28-26, 12-25, 25-23, 15-11) and then finished the day by defeating Berry College 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18).
In the opener, Mobile trailed 24-21 in the second set and faced the prospect of falling in an 0-2 hole. Instead, kills by Whitney Knight and Cassy Johnson, and an ace from Paula Stilkey tied the set at 24 apiece to give Mobile new life. Later, a Knight ace finished off the set in favor of Mobile. Paula Stilkey led Mobile with 14 kills, Amy Carey added 27 assists and 10 digs, Whitney Knight collected 16 digs, and Nicole Stokes finished with 19 assists and 13 digs.
In the final match, Kelly Sherling led the way with 11 kills and Knight finished with a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs. Mobile out-hit Berry .213 to .086 and finished with 14 more kills.
The Lady Rams return home to host Pensacola Christian College Tuesday, September 16 at 7:30 pm.
Friday, Sept. 12: Mobile beats Shorter and St. Thomas
ROME, Ga-- The 23rd-ranked University of Mobile volleyball team remained undefeated with a pair of victories on the opening day of the Berry College Tournament Friday. Mobile opened by beating Shorter 3-1 (14-25, 25-13, 25-12, 25-15) and then finished the opening day by beating St. Thomas 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 24-26, 27-25) to move to 7-0 on the season.
In the opener, the Lady Rams struggled early and dropped set one to Shorter, while managing only 5 kills. But the Mobile offense picked it up and pulled out a victory, hitting .429, .333 and .556 over the final 3 sets.
Kelly Sherling gave Mobile a needed lift on offense, with 11 kills, and Whitney Knight added 10 kills and 6 digs.
The second match found Mobile in a battle with St. Thomas. Sherling finished with 13 kills and Knight added a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs. Nicole Stokes led Mobile with 25 assists.
