Lady Rams fall to Belhaven
MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile Lady Rams fell 1-3 (23-30, 23-30, 30-25, 27-30) at home to Gulf Coast Athletic Conference foe Belhaven Friday night.
A day after losing a key regional match to Lee, Mobile was looking to get back on the winning track, but fell short in 4 games. Game 1 was close to the midway point, with 5 ties up to 18-18. With the match about to swing in Mobile's favor at 22-23, Belhaven called a timely timeout and went on a 7-1 run to end the game and go up 1-0.
Game 2 wasn't close, as the Lady Blazers ran away with a 8-20 lead over Mobile. The closest the Lady Rams could get was within 6 at 23-29, but it was no use. Belhaven finished it off for the 2-0 advantage.
Facing elimination, Mobile responded in a very tight game 3. The game saw 7 ties, and after falling behind at 22-23 the Lady Rams went on a tear to end it, helped by back-to-back Syretta Baldwin blocks to push the lead to a commanding 28-23.
It looked like Mobile was going to force a game 5 when they pulled ahead in game four when Mobile led early at 8-3 and late at 21-19. Unfortunately for the Lady Rams, Belhaven proved to be too much on this night and held off a late Ram surge for the 27-30 match-clinching victory.
Whitney Knight led the way for the Lady Rams with 14 kills and 13 digs, while Tasha Buchanan came in with 10 kills and 7 digs of her own from the setter position. Syretta Baldwin and Paula Stilkey added 11 kills apiece.
Mobile travels to Dillard Saturday for a 7:00 start.
