Lady Rams Rally To Go 3-1 At Tourney

GEORGETOWN, Ky—The 19th-ranked University of Mobile volleyball team ended the Georgetown College Bone Yard Brawl on a high note by rallying to take down Indiana Wesleyan 3-2 Saturday evening.

Mobile won 27-25, 15-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-11, coming from behind in several of the sets.

The opening set was the first Mobile comeback, as the Lady Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan jumped ahead 7-3 and 10-5 to take an early edge. Mobile battled back to tie it up at 12-12 and then it went back-and-forth from there, until Indiana Wesleyan held a 24-22 edge, only 1 point away from a victory. A service error gave Mobile the ball and then a pair of kills and a block from DeCreisha Arrington helped put it away in favor of the Lady Rams.

The second set was all Lady Wildcats, as they led the entire way and picked up an easy 25-15 win to even up the match at 1 game apiece. The third set belonged to Indiana Wesleyan as well, though it was much closer. Mobile led late 19-16, but the Lady Wildcats went on a 9-2 run to close it out, capped with a block.

It looked like the Lady Wildcats would cruise to a win in set number four to clinch the match, but Mobile had other plans. IWU jumped ahead 7-1 and 10-4, looking in control. Mobile slowly chipped away and got within striking distance at 12-17. From there, they used a 6-2 run, started by a pair of Kelly Sherling kills to pull within one. Mobile closed it out on a IWU block error.

The final set, fittingly enough, featured another Lady Ram comeback. Trailing 10-6, Mobile used a pair of blocks and Kristen Simpson kills to rally and take a lead. Nicole Stokes finished it up with an ace.

Paula Stilkey led with 15 kills, All-Tournament selection Whitney Knight added 13 kills and 24 digs, Kelly Sherling and Syretta Baldwin had 12 kills apiece, and DeCreisha Arrington added 10.

Saturday, Oct. 25: Mobile Rallies To Beat Freed-Hardeman

GEORGETOWN, Ky—The 19th-ranked University of Mobile volleyball team used a brilliant come-from-behind victory in game three to pick up a 3-2 victory over Freed-Hardeman on day two of the Georgetown College Bone Yard Brawl Saturday.

Mobile won 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 15-9 to move to 27-2 on the season.

In the opening set, Mobile kept battling back and even tied the score at 15-15 after being down 9-13, but the Lady Rams couldn’t put together any runs to pull out the victory. Georgetown pulled away from that 15-15 score with a quick 6-2 run to take control of things.

The second set saw the Lady Rams pull ahead early and then bounce back from a late deficit for the 25-21 victory to even things up at 1-1. Mobile built a 16-10 lead when Syretta Baldwin and Paula Stilkey teamed up for a block. Freed rallied with 8 straight points to take a 2-point lead, but the Lady Rams answered the call by making enough plays to pull out the victory.

The third set was the key. Freed-Hardeman controlled the set early and often, building a 16-10 lead and a 20-11 advantage before Mobile rallied. Mobile pulled within 4 at 18-22, and then kills from Whitney Knight and Paula Stilkey and a pair of aces from Kristen Simpson tied it at 23-23. A Lady Lions block error ended the match.

Set four saw Freed do a little comeback of their own. Mobile was up late 19-17, before the Lady Lions went on a 8-1 run to finish off the match, including taking the final 6 points.

The final set was back-and-forth early, but Mobile pulled away for the match-clinching 15-9 victory. Mobile’s offense keyed the win with 11 kills out of 15 points, including four from Knight and three from Syretta Baldwin. Mobile plays Indiana Wesleyan at 3:00 pm.

Friday, Oct. 24: Mobile Bounces Back For 3-0 Win

GEORGETOWN, Ky-- After dropping just their second match all season to open the Georgetown College Bone Yard Brawl, Mobile bounced back nicely with a decisive 3-0 victory over Bethany College. Mobile won 25-15, 25-20, 25-18.

The first set found Mobile down early at 9-12, but the team quickly took control of the match. The Lady Rams went on a 15-1 run to put the match away, before the Swedes took a couple of late points.

Syretta Baldwin and Paula Stilkey teamed up to bring it to a 12-12 tie, with a kill and ace, respectively, and then a trio of Bethany errors gave the Lady Rams a 3-point edge.

The second set saw Mobile pull ahead and hold on thanks to a stout defense. The Lady Rams jumped up 7-3 and then 18-10, before the Swedes made a late run, before falling short.  Mobile had 6 blocks in the set and held the Swedes to a .026 attack percentage.

The final set, saw a close battle early, and then an explosive offensive outburst by Mobile. The teams battled back and forth early, with the set becoming tied at 15-15, and then Mobile took over. Baldwin and DeCreisha Arrington got the run started with back-to-back kills, and then the rest of the team chipped in. After points came from 4 different players in the run, Kelly Sherling took over with 3 kills in the final 4 points.

Mobile (26-2) will return to action in bracket play Saturday with matchups to be determined.

Friday, Oct. 24: Lady Rams Fall To Campbellsville 3-1

GEORGETOWN, Ky—The University of Mobile volleyball team dropped its opening match at the Georgetown College Bone Yard Brawl in a battle of NAIA Top-25 squads Friday evening. 23rd-ranked Campbellsville took down the 19th-ranked Lady Rams 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19).

The match was a tale of two halves, as the first two sets were closely contested, with neither team building a lead by more than 3 points. But, the final two sets were all Campbellsville, with costly Mobile errors and a stout Tigers’ defense.

After the teams battled back-and-forth early in the opening set, Mobile built a 16-13 lead, before the Lady Tigers made good use of the tip-attack to rally and eventually tie it up at 20 apiece. Down 22-23, Syretta Baldwin and Whitney Knight hammered down kills to put Mobile one point away from taking the opening set, 24-23. But, the Lady Tigers reeled off three straight points for the 26-24 win.

Set No. 2 was pretty much the same, but went in favor of the Lady Rams. Neither team could pull away early, and then Mobile built a late lead of 22-20 on a Whitney Knight kill, and 24-21 when DeCreisha Arrington went back-to-back with a kill and block. Mobile picked up the 25-23 win on a Campbellsville service error.

The third set was all Lady Tigers, after they stretched an 8-7 lead into a nice 16-12 advantage, which was the first time either team lead by more than 3 in the match. They went on a little 4-1 spurt from there to go up by seven, 20-13 and put it out of reach.

The final set was close early, but Campbellsville rose to the occasion down the stretch and pulled away at the end. Mobile actually led by 3 halfway through, 17-14, but the Lady Tigers quickly tied it up 17-17. They went on an 8-2 run to close it out.

Mobile (25-2) next plays tonight against Bethany College.
