Lady Rams Finish Tourney 2-2
GEORGETOWN, Ky—The University of Mobile volleyball team finished up a split at the Georgetown College Tournament by defeating Olivet Nazarene 3-2 (25-30, 30-18, 35-37, 30-21, 15-9) in their final match of the tournament.
After dropping the opening game, the Lady Rams made a surge in the second game. Trailing 7-6, Mobile finished the game with a 23-12 run to tie the match at one game apiece. Game 3 was a classic back-and-forth affair in which nobody led by more than 3, but Olivet Nazarene took it and put the Lady Rams on the brink of elimination.
In game 4, the Lady Rams never trailed and led by as much as 10 before claiming the 9-point margin of victory to force a decisive game 5.
In the clincher, the Lady Rams dominated with 10 kills to win.
Whitney Knight picked up a double-double with 17 kills and 19 digs in the victory for Mobile and Syretta Baldwin did likewise with 22 kills and 10 digs. Nicole Stokes also turned in an all-around solid effort with 33 assists and 18 digs for the Lady Rams.
Mobile moves to 28-4 on the season and next plays at home Tuesday, October 30th at 7:30 pm versus Spring Hill College.
Game 3:
GEORGETOWN, Ky—After splitting a pair of matches versus ranked teams on Friday, the University of Mobile volleyball team dropped its opening match Saturday at the Georgetown College Tournament, losing 3-1 (30-28, 28-30, 21-30, 27-30).
Things looked go for Mobile in the early going, as the Lady Rams won the opening game and then started off game 2 on a hot streak. Mobile built up a 16-10 lead, but Bellevue fought back and took another hard fought game.
Game 3 saw Bellevue finish with a flourish to pull out the win. Mobile led 21-20, but Bellevue went on an 11-1 roll to finish off the game.
The Lady Rams went into game 4 needing a victory to force a winner-take-all game 5, and the team started out as if they were going to do just that. Mobile used several Bellevue miscues and got 3 kills from Syretta Baldwin as they jumped ahead 11-3 on the Bruins.
Mobile did not relinquish that lead until late, when the Bruins went ahead 26-25 and never looked back on their way to the 3-1 match victory.
The Lady Rams move to 27-4 on the season and will face another team that is yet to be determined at 3:00 pm.
Game 2:
GEORGETOWN, KY-- The University of Mobile volleyball team rallied after an opening day 3-0 loss, to beat #21 Savannah College of Arts & Design 3-1 to wrap up day 1 of the Georgetown College Tournament.
The Lady Rams (27-3) dominated the opening game 30-21, and never trailed after SCAD held an early 2-1 lead.
Game 2 was back and forth, and SCAD actually held a 24-23 lead before the Lady Rams finished the game with a 7-0 run to win 30-24. The Bees rebounded to take the 3rd game 30-24 and force a game 4.
Game 4 saw another comeback from Mobile, as the Lady Rams rallied from a 26-23 deficit to win the match with a 30-28 victory.
Whitney Knight, Syretta Baldwin and Paula Stilkey all recorded double-doubles for the Lady Rams. Knight picked up 15 kills and 11 digs, Baldwin had 14 and 12, while Stilkey finished with 15 and 13. Amber Presnell paced Mobile with 16 digs and 3 aces. Mobile will play Bellevue (Neb) Saturday at 9:00 am.
GAME 1:
GEORGETOWN, Ky—The University of Mobile volleyball team dropped its first match in the last 23 contests, falling to #18 Georgetown College 3-0 (28-30, 28-30, 23-30) in its first contest at the Georgetown College Tournament.
As the score would indicate, the Lady Rams were oh so close to taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The opening game was close all the way, with neither team able to break away by more than 3 until late, when Georgetown went up 24-20.
Mobile kept fighting back, but fell short, falling 30-28. In game 2, it appeared Georgetown would show why it is ranked in the top 20, as the host school jumped ahead to a 7-1 lead.
But, the Lady Rams showed they belong and fought back to knot the game at 17-17 on a Georgetown ball handling error. Mobile was able to muster a late 21-20 lead, but the home team fought back and took the game 30-28.
Game 3 was back-and-forth early like the previous two games, but Georgetown pulled away to a 20-14 lead and never looked back to finish off the match.
Whitney Knight paced the Lady Rams with another double-double, netting 16 kills and 15 digs, to lead in both categories. Paula Stilkey was the only other Mobile player to rack up double-digit kills, using a .320 hitting percentage to pick up 11.
Nicole Stokes led the team with 22 assists and helped out the defense with 11 digs of her own. Mobile goes to 26-3 on the season and will battle #21 SCAD today at 5:00 pm.
