Mobile Sweeps Pair On Friday
Knight again led with 17 kills against Dillard, while Fowler added 10 kills for Mobile. Tenney finished with 39 assists, while Paula Stilkey finished with 9 kills and 3 aces. In the opening set, Mobile ran out to a 12-3 lead and cruised the rest of the way before finishing the set by taking nine of the final twelve points. Set No. 2 was all Mobile as the Lady Rams surged ahead 18-3 before scoring seven of the final eight points for the 25-6 win. Dillard held a 7-6 lead in the final set, but Mobile answered with a 4-0 run. Mobile held on from there and then scored nine of the final 12 for the victory. Mobile (22-11) will play at 10 am Saturday against the winner of tonight's Belhaven/SUNO matchup. Match 1: Mobile 3 - Spring Hill 0 MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile volleyball team made short work of rival Spring Hill College 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-16) in the opening match of the 2009 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Friday morning at Pharr Gymnasium. Mobile (21-11) got a 17-kill, 14-dig double-double from Whitney Knight and an 11-kill, 10-dig double-double from McGill-Toolen product Sarah Scott in the win. Melody Tenney added 37 assists and Blaire Fowler finished with 9 kills while hitting .368. Cassandra Marchand led Spring Hill with 6 kills, while Melissa Williams led the way with 9 digs. Spring Hill started out well, leading 6-4 in set No. 1, but the Lady Rams went on a 10-1 run thanks to three Fowler kills to take a 14-7 lead. Mobile rolled from there, leading by as much as 10 points at 21-11. Mobile started off set No. 2 with an 8-3 run, but the Lady Badgers fought back to trim the deficit to 13-12, before Mobile answered by taking seven of the next nine points for a 20-13 lead. Fowler and Knight combined for four kills in the spurt. In the final set, Mobile built a 9-5 lead and then never led by less than 5 points the rest of the way. The GCAC Tournament Champion will earn a bid to the 2009 NAIA National Championship.
