Lady Rams Earn Bid To National Tourney
NEW ORLEANS, La-- The University of Mobile Lady Rams defeated Loyola University in straight sets to win the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament and earn a spot in the 2008 NAIA National Tournament.
After dropping their last match to Loyola in the regular season, Mobile exacted revenge, winning 25-20, 25-18, 25-17. The win moves the Lady Rams to 32-3 on the season and gives the program their first GCAC Tournament Title, despite winning the Regular Season Conference Championship each of the last three seasons.
Syretta Baldwin led the way with 12 kills while hitting .600 and Kelly Sherling added 11 kills with a .579 hitting percentage. Nicole Stokes had 26 assists and 8 digs.
The first round of the National Tournament will be held Nov. 22. Each match will be held at a different site, and the match ups will be released by the NAIA office Sunday evening. The winners of those matches advance to the remainder of the tournament Dec. 2-6 in Sioux Falls, Iowa.
Semifinals: Mobile defeats Dillard 3-0
NEW ORLEANS, La—The 23rd-ranked University of Mobile volleyball team defeated Dillard University 3-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals Saturday afternoon at Loyola University.
The Lady Rams defeated Dillard 25-17, 25-8, 25-15. Mobile (31-3) was led offensively by Paula Stilkey, who had 13 kills and 4 blocks. Kelly Sherling had 10 kills and 8 digs, while Whitney Knight contributed 7 kills, 13 digs and 3 service aces in the win.
