Lady Rams Win Another Overtime Game

JACKSON, Miss—The University of Mobile women’s basketball team won its second straight overtime game in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action Saturday evening, beating Tougaloo College 84-79 on the road.

Through regulation, the Lady Rams controlled the tempo and got to the charity stripe 23 more times than Tougaloo. The Lady Rams converted 19 of the freebies, while the Lady Bulldogs hit all 9 of their shots.

That theme rang true in overtime as Mobile knocked down four clutch free throws to win the game. The home team took a 79-78 lead with 1:14 left to play and then the Lady Rams went back to work. Danielle Goodly knocked down a pair to give Mobile a one-point lead with 50 seconds remaining, then freshman Crystal Hutchinson stepped to the line with 30 seconds left.

Hutchinson had missed her last 5 shots from the free throw line on the night, but the Mobile native came up big and drained a pair to give her team a three-point lead. From there, Mobile held on for the win.

The first half saw Mobile take control early, only to head into the break trailing. The Lady Rams built a 30-19 lead with 7:28 remaining in the period, but the Lady Bulldogs responded with a 21-9 run to take a 40-39 lead into the break. Mobile out shot Tougaloo 61% to 47% in the half, but Erica McElroy made up the difference for the Lady Bulldogs with 16 first-half points.

The second half was back-and-forth the entire way, with both teams trading buckets to the very end, when the game went to overtime tied up a 72-72.

Mobile was led by 26 points from Goodly, 16 points and 10 rebounds from Hutchinson, 12 points from Anna Maddox, 11 points from Sherri McIntosh and 10 points from Angela Bounds.

Mobile moves to 6-7 on the year, with a 2-0 conference ledger. Next up for the Lady Rams is a game at Dillard University, Thursday, January 10th at 5:30 pm.
