UM Women Drop First
Conference Game
JACKSON, Miss. - The
Belhaven College Blazers (7-10, 2-4) went 19-of-20 from the
charity stripe to pull off a 64-58 upset win over the
University of Mobile Rams (10-6, 4-1). In only their first
loss of the conference season, the Rams committed 24 turnovers
and shot 52.2 percent from the free throw line.
Jumping out to a 12-6 lead, the Rams watched their lead slip
away. Holding onto only a 17-16 lead the Rams were forced to
call for timeout midway through the half.
The Blazers' run didn't stop.
A Tamekia Foley bucket sparked a 10-2 run as Belhaven opened
up a 26-19 lead with less than seven minutes to go. The Rams
however responded with a 14-4 run of their own as they took a
33-30 lead at the half.
With the game slipping away, as the Rams built a 51-45 lead,
the Blazers called for timeout with 7:20 remaining in the
game. It was a free throw clinic from that point on as the
Blazers shot 12-of-14 from the line.
Tying the game at 58-58 with just over two minutes remaining,
Belhaven continued to convert on trips to the free throw line
as they picked up just their second conference win.
The Blazers, without their super sophomore Mallory Ranfos,
were led by Tamekia Foley's 19 points with Colette White and
Nicole Jordan each scoring 12.
The Rams, who will return home for a Saturday matchup against
LSU-Shreveport, were led by Crystal Coston's 22 points and
Keli Saragusa's 10.
