Lady Rams Hang On For Win

MOBILE, Ala—The University of Mobile women’s basketball team held off a second-half surge by visiting William Carey University to walk away with an 81-75 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory.

The Lady Rams dominated the first half of action, shooting a blistering 73% from the field. The ball game was 10-7 in favor of Mobile early thanks to 8 points from Anna Maddox. Then, Mobile went on a 20-8 run to take a 30-15 lead with 9:21 left in the half.

From there, Mobile continued to hit its shots and use a smothering defense to create easy opportunities for the offense. The Lady Rams racked up 4 blocks and 11 steals, while holding the Lady Saders to 38% shooting from the floor.

Sherri McIntosh, Crystal Hutchinson, and Anna Maddox finished with 10 points, 10 points, and 13 points respectively. William Carey hit 7-of-15 from downtown to keep the game from getting out of hand. Despite that hot shooting, Mobile led 52-33.

The second half of action was a completely different story for Mobile, as the Lady Rams’ shooting percentage dropped to 30%, and the Lady Saders again nailed 7-of-16 from downtown.

Mobile led 54-33 with 19:26 to go and William Carey went on an impressive run. The Lady Saders dominated the next 15:30 of action and used a 44-15 run to cut the deficit to 74-69.

Down the stretch, the Lady Rams missed 4 shots from the charity stripe and allowed the visitors to close within 77-75 on a 3-pointer from Shonte Kennedy with 54 seconds remaining. But, Mobile responded and a pair of free throws from Hutchinson and a late steal from Angela Bounds iced the game for Mobile.

Hutchinson finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds, McIntosh added 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Anna Maddox went off for 16 points. Taphne Jackson paced William Carey with 25 points on 6-of-7 shooting from deep. Fallon Hartfield added an 11 point- 17 rebound effort.

Mobile moves to 13-11 overall and 9-3 in GCAC play. Mobile next plays at Loyola on Feb. 14th at 5:30 PM.
