Rams lose heartbreaker to Belhaven College, 111-109
JACKSON, Miss. -- The University of Mobile (20-7, 11-4) rallied from
a six point halftime deficit to force overtime and then another but eventually
fell 111-109
to Belhaven College Thursday night in a wild double-overtime game played
in Jackson, Mississippi.
The Lady Blazers took control in the first half with a great shooting
performance from the floor, including an 80% clip from beyond
the three-point arc (4-of-5). As a result, Belhaven took a 50-44
lead into the lockeroom. In the second
half,
Belhaven
was able to stretch their lead out to as big as a nine-point lead, but
Mobile would draw even before the end of regulation. The Lady Blazers
last second
three-point attempt by LaTonya Thomas drew the front iron, but would
not fall as the game moved into the first overtime period.
Mobile jumped out to a six-point lead early in the session, however,
the Lady Blazers would storm back and tie the game at 100-all sending
the game into double overtime. Once again, the second overtime saw both
teams go back and forth, with the
Lady Blazers getting out to a lead early and Mobile having
to come back. Late free throws by Amanda Barbee and a huge offensive
rebound by Renata Raymond secured the victory for the Lady Blazers.
Tamekia Foley poured in a season-high 38 points and
collected four assists and three steals.
Crystal Coston led Mobile with 25 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds
while Kinga Rybarczyk scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds of her
own.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 when they host Xavier
University at Pharr Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
