UM Women Sweep Rivals
MOBILE, Ala – With only 2 games remaining to decide the seedings for the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, the University of Mobile women’s basketball team needs to take care of business to have a shot at the #2 slot; and they did just that Thursday at rival Spring Hill.
The Lady Rams trailed by as much as 14 in the opening period of play, but rallied for a 73-63 win to sweep the season series with the Lady Badgers.
Spring Hill out-shot the Lady Rams from downtown in the first half to control much of the action. The Lady Badgers finished 4-for-9 from behind the arch, while Mobile missed on all 6 attempts.
A trio of early deep balls gave the Lady Badgers an early 15-10 lead, and from there, the home team would stretch the lead to as much as 14, before heading into the break with a 38-27 edge.
The second half, was a different story, as Mobile upped its shooting from 33% to 50% to make a run. The Lady Rams used a quick 13-6 spurt on the heels of a couple of baskets from Sherri McIntosh and a three-pointer from Lakeela Lowe to trim the deficit to 4 with 10:40 remaining.
From there, the Lady Badgers kept answering to keep the lead until Danielle Goodly drained a 3-pointer from the corner to knot the game at 55-55 with 6:05 to play. After a Crystal Hutchinson freebie gave Mobile a tenuous one-point lead, Rashonda Belton knocked down a three for the Lady Badgers to retake a 58-56 lead.
Then, the Lady Rams ran away with the ball game, using a 17-5 run to close out the contest. With Mobile leading 64-60, Angela Bounds took over for Mobile and reeled off 7 points to clinch the victory for Mobile.
Crystal Hutchinson led Mobile with 24 points, Sherri McIntosh added a double-double with 16 points and 15 boards, and Bounds and Goodly chipped in 11 points apiece for the Lady Rams.
Sharidan Hollis and Rashonda Belton led the Badgers with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Lady Rams move to 17-12 overall and 13-4 in GCAC action. Mobile next plays at Belhaven College Saturday at 5:00 pm.
