Lady Rams Falter at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss—The University of Mobile women’s basketball team ended the regular season on a sour note, turning the ball over early and often on their way to a 66-52 setback at Gulf Coast Athletic Conference foe Belhaven College.

Belhaven took control of the game right of the bat, turning Mobile turnovers into an early 12-4 lead and never looking back.

The Lady Blazers out-shot the Lady Rams 48% to 38% and got 13 points apiece from Jira Williams and Samantha Kirkwood on their way to a 36-20 lead at the break.

The second half did not go any better for Mobile, as the Lady Blazers did not stand pat, instead they built that 16 point edge to a 21-point lead at 46-25. The Lady Rams kept fighting, but could only cut the deficit to 12 late.

Mobile (17-13, 13-5) will be the #3 seed in the 2008 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament that begins March 4th. The Lady Rams will have a bye week on that date and then host either Belhaven or LSU-Shreveport at 7:00 pm on March 6th.

Crystal Hutchinson gave Mobile 17 points and Angela Bounds added 11 points.

Williams paced all scorers with 20 points for Belhaven, while Kirkwood added 19 and Jaelyn Stringer added 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks.
