RAMS LOSES TO DILLARD
IN CONFERENCE FINAL
New Orleans, La. - The 23rd-ranked University of Mobile women's
basketball team (22-12) will have to settle for an at-large bid
to the NAIA National Tournament as they fell to Dillard
University 56-51 in the GCAC conference final.
While both teams struggled from the field, Dillard managed to
open their largest lead of the game, 16-5, midway through the
first half. Mobile however responded with a 10-2 run and headed
into the locker rooms down only 27-26.
With both teams shooting only 30%, turnovers once again became
the Rams' achilles heel. Mobile committed 26, compared to the
Lady Devilette's 12. Despite their inability to take care of the
ball, the Rams were resilient to the very end as senior Paula
Dill nailed a 3-pointer with 9 seconds remaining to pull Mobile
to within 3. However it was not enough as Dillard hit free
throws down the stretch to hold on for the win and earn an
automatic bid to the national tournament.
The Rams were led by All-Tournament selection Crystal Coston who
scored 9 points and grabbed 17 boards.
Tournament MVP Theresa Samuels led Dillard with 21 points, 7
steals and 2 assists.
The NAIA National Tournament, held at Oman Arena in Jackson,
Tenn., starts on March 19.
