Women's Basketball Warms Up With Pair of Wins

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's basketball team hosted a pair of scrimmages Saturday and went 2-0 to get ready for the season.

"In the first scrimmage we hung in there and won it," Coach Martha Gore-Algernon said. "In the second game, we did what we needed to do, to get the win."

In that opener, the Lady Rams trailed Pensacola Junior College 31-29 at halftime, but rallied to win the game 75-50.

Mobile's 3 returning starters led the way on offense. Senior Angela Bounds poured in 23 points, Sherri McIntosh added 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Danielle Goodly finished with 12 points and 8 steals.

In the finale Saturday, the Lady Rams cruised to a 71-41 win over Bishop State Community College thanks to a 34-11 2nd-half advantage.

McIntosh finished with a 20 and 10 double-double, while Bounds added 12 points. Johnitia Williams and Laura Jones rounded out the double-digit performers with 10 points apiece. Newcomers Lakeela Lowe and Crystal Hutchinson finished with 6 points and 8 rebounds apiece.

While the Lady Rams picked up victories, there is still plenty to work on before the season starts.

"We've got to get better defensively," Coach Gore-Algernon said. "We played against some athletic people, and net to get better defending the dribble-drive, contesting shots and boxing out."

Gore also added that with such a young team (only 4 returning players), it was nice to get some game-experience.
