Rams shock No. 9 Campbellsville 75-70 in overtime

MOBILE, Ala. -- Led by two-time All-American Crystal Coston’s 27 points and 12 rebounds, the Rams opened their season with a bid for top-25 consideration as they defeated the 9th-ranked Tigers of Campbellsville University (0-1), 75-70. Despite relinquishing a seven-point lead with just over a minute to go in regulation and allowing the Tigers of Campbellsville to force overtime, the University of Mobile women’s basketball team (1-0) retook control of a game in which they dominated and held as much as a 14 point lead in.

Holding a 5-4 lead with 17:45 to go in the first half, the Tigers watched the Rams outscore them 26-15 over the course of the next 13 minutes and entered the half down 36-31.

With their lead cut to two, 38-36 with 17:01 remaining in the second half, the Rams went on a 12-0 run while holding the Tiger scoreless until midway through the half. Coston accounted for six of those points as Campbellsville’s two post players Jenny Noort and Tiffany Roaden couldn’t stop the quick UM forward.

With 4:34 remaining however, the Tigers went on the prowl as they used a 12-2 run to send the game into overtime. Roaden capped off the incredible run with a three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to keep the 9th-ranked Tigers’ hopes alive.

Coston scored six of the Rams 10 points in overtime to almost single-handedly give the Rams their greatest season-opening win ever.

Sophomore Rheonda Leary pitched in 12 points and seven rebounds with Jessica Barber showing that she’s ready for a great senior campaign, scoring nine points, to go along with four steals and three assists.

Tiffany Roaden had a monster of a night for the Tigers as she poured in 34 points and seven rebounds. Jenny Noort added 13.

The Rams will take on Blue Mountain College Sat. at 4 p.m. while the Tigers will look to rebound from tonight’s loss with a 2 p.m. game against the Spring Hill College Badgers.
