Lady Rams Fall at NCAA Div I Team
MONTGOMERY, Ala—A fourth consecutive tough opponent to begin the 2007-08 season proved too much to handle for the University of Mobile women’s basketball team Saturday night in Montgomery.
The Lady Rams succumbed to NCAA Div I Alabama State University 69-60 to fall to 1-3 on the season after playing 3 ranked NAIA teams to begin the year.
Mobile’s women led 2-0, but the Lady Hornets of Alabama State quickly asserted themselves and jumped ahead 15-4 6 minutes into play. Angela Bounds cut that deficit to 7 at the 9:49 mark, 19-12. From there, the Lady Hornets went on a 26-10 run to end the half with a comfortable 45-22 lead.
In the opening frame, the Lady Hornets shot 5-11 from downtown, compared to 1-5 from Mobile. They also out-shot the Lady Rams 58.6% to 30% from the floor.
Alabama State kept a 20+ point lead for the first 6:10 of the second half, but the Lady Rams made a late run to make the game competitive.
The Lady Rams cut the lead to 12 with a deuce from Laura Jones at the 3:55 mark and then Anna Maddox grabbed a rebound and scored a put-back with 3:23 left to play to cut the deficit to 10.
But, unfortunately for the Lady Rams, Alabama State was able to keep their composure and hold on to the very end, when a Jenee Washington bucket brought Mobile within 9 and finished the scoring at 60-69.
Mobile falls to 1-3 on the season and next plays at home Friday, November 16th against Southern Nazarene at 8:00 pm. Freshmen post players Crystal Hutchinson and Laura Jones led the Lady Rams with 11 and 13 points, respectively.
