9TH-RANKED RAMS DEFEATS NO. 11 LAMBUTH UNIVERSITY

MOBILE, Ala. – The 9th-ranked University of Mobile women’s basketball team (6-3) only gave up the lead once, midway through the first half, en route to defeating No. 11-ranked Lambuth University 72-49. The win extends the Rams winning streak to 3 as they now prepare for the Port City Classic where they will play 13th-ranked Brescia University (Ky.).

“This was definitely a good performance,” Coach Martha Algernon said. “We played like this against West Alabama and won.”

While the Rams opened as much as an 8-point lead, the Eagles fought back to take a 17-15 lead with 9:01 remaining in the first half. It was the last time Lambuth would see the lead as the Rams outscored the Eagles 18-4 in the final 8:00 minutes of the half to head into the locker rooms with a 33-21 lead. Despite committing 15 first-half turnovers, the Rams managed to reconcile not taking care of the ball by holding the Eagles to 24 percent shooting on 9-of-37 shots from the floor.

“Turnovers are still the stat we’re working on that sticks out more than anything else,” Coach Algernon explained. “We played hard but we turned it over 22 times and that’s not going to win us games down the road. But when we execute, play hard defense and rebound the way we have been it makes up for those turnovers.”

The Eagles were unable cut into a Mobile lead that was as much as 27 with 3:32 remaining in the game. Out-rebounding the Eagles 48-36, while forcing 20 turnovers and holding Lambuth to 28 percent shooting on 18-of-63 shots from the floor, the Rams seemingly have things back on track.

“The West Alabama game was a big turn around for us,” a pleased Rams coach explained. “We took that game as a challenge. Hopefully, we can take each game from here on out that way, and play hard.”

The Rams were led by Kinga Rybarczyk’s 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles (5-7) were led by Dani Howard’s 17 points with Angie DeSantis getting 13.
