Coston's 22 points lead Rams to upset
win over NCAA Division I Nicholls State
Thibodaux, La.- Crystal Coston scored a game-high 22 points
in leading her University of Mobile team to a 59-57 upset win over NCAA
Division I opponent Nicholls State University Tuesday night in Thibodaux,
Louisiana.
Nicholls, who fell to 2-2 overall, led 57-51 after Katherine Plummer
made an underneath basket with 2:30 remaining. However, the Rams (4-2)
went on an 8-0 run to close out the game.
Despite trailing by two points, Nicholls had a chance to send the contest
into overtime with less than 10 seconds remaining. After Jessica Barber
went 1-of-2 from the free throw line, Nicholls’ Nkechi Nwachukwu
grabbed a rebound of Barber's missed shot but
Jamie Octave's shot with four seconds remaining missed its
mark.
Nicholls jumped out to a 6-2 lead thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by
Cristin Burdette (17 points) and Octave. After tying the game at 6-6,
Nicholls went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-8 advantage at the 14:32 mark.
But, the Rams answered by going on an 11-0 run to jump ahead 19-14 with
less than 10 minutes showing on the clock.
The first half ended with Kinga Rybarczyk making a jumper to give her
team a 29-25 lead.
The Lady Colonels trailed the Rams until the 12:46 mark of the second
half when Nwachukwu converted on two free throw attempts to tie the contest
at 41-41.
Leading the way in scoring for Mobile were Coston and Rybarczyk. Coston
recorded a double-double, as she had 22 points and 15 rebounds, while
Rybarczyk tallied 15 points.
The Lady Rams will next be in action on Friday, Dec. 10, at home when
they take on arch-rival Auburn University Montgomery.
