MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile
women’s basketball team erased a 13-point deficit to improve to
8-3 with a 66-51 over 11th-ranked Brescia University.
Getting a strong 17-point second half performance from freshman
center Crystal Coston, the Rams’ 5 game winning streak will find
its next challenge Tuesday, Dec. 17, against Oklahoma Christian
University.
“They’re a good team,” Coach Algernon
said of the upcoming game against Oklahoma Christian. “Stephanie
Findley, their head coach, is a good friend of mine. She does a
great job with her girls. She’ll come here this week and give us
a good game. It’s fun and it’s almost a chess match because she
knows what I’m going to do and vice versa.”
Mobile will be confident heading into
that showdown against the Eagles, after toppling the 11th-ranked
and 6-4 Bearcats this afternoon. The Rams did however have to
overcome a 13-point first-half deficit to pick up their biggest
win of the season.
Up 14-9, the Bearcats went on a 10-2 run
midway through the first half. Despite 15 turnovers and a
3-of-10 performance from the charity stripe, the Rams managed to
cut the Bearcats lead to 5 at the half, heading into the locker
rooms down 31-26.
“Our free-throws is a huge issue with us
right now,” said the Rams Coach. “We shot 30-something percent
from the free-throw line. Our turnovers were also terrible. We
have to take better care of the ball and hit free-throws.”
Taking a momentum change into the second
half, the Rams started an 11-0 run with 15:07 remaining in the
game. Holding Brescia scoreless during that run, Mobile gained a
45-40 advantage and never looked back as they pulled away for
the 66-51 win.
“Brescia today was a good team,” Coach
Algernon said. “They fought hard and we had good performances by
a number of people today. It wasn’t just one person. It was
everybody.”
The Rams, who overcame 26 turnovers and
a 6-of-19 shooting performance from the free-throw line, were
led by Crystal Coston’s 25 points and 11 rebounds. After being
sick for the last two weeks, 2002 All-American Shanelle
Stallworth came off the bench to give an outstanding 12 point,
10 rebound, and 3 blocked-shots performance.
The Bearcats were led by Stephanie
Duncan’s 14 points and Kristie Ballard’s 11.
