Head Golf
Coach, University of Mobile
Entering his
nineteenth season of coaching at the University of Mobile, Dr. Terry Hopper
continues to build upon the success he helped to create over 20 years ago.
After coming to the
University of Mobile in 1970 to become a professor and teach, it didn't take
Hopper very long before he helped in the development of the athletic program
back in 1984. Hopper was named head coach of the athletic program's first
sport, men's golf.
Hopper, a graduate
of the University of Mississippi, originally went to Delta State and played a
year and a half of tennis before enlisting in the military for four and a half
years. After coming out of the military, Hopper returned to school at the
University of Mississippi where he received his first of three degrees in
Physical Education.
After receiving his
Master's Degree in Physical Education and helping coach numerous teams as a
graduate assistant at Northeast Louisiana, Hopper returned to the University of
Mississippi to obtain his PHD in Physical Education.
Struggling to find
their identity in the team's inaugural season, the men's golf team finished 13th
in the NAIA in just their second season and finished as runners-up to the
national champions in their third season.
In 1994, the
University of Mobile created a women's team and again it wasn't very long before
the team was competing with the best in the nation.
Three years later
in 1997, Hopper helped lead the men's team to their first national championship
and just one year after that, he led the women's program to a championship in
just their fifth season.
When not teaching
in the classroom or coaching out on the golf course, Hopper enjoys playing the
game of golf in his own personal time.
